TV GLOBO (BRAZIL) & NHK (JAPAN) WIN FIRST INTERNATIONAL EMMY® FOR NEWS & CURRENT AFFAIRS

New York, September 26, 2011 – The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced today the 2011 International Emmy® Awards winners for its News and Current Affairs categories. TV Globo (Brazil) and NHK (Japan) both garnered their first ever Emmy wins in the News and Current Affairs categories.

“Although TV Globo and NHK are both large and respected media organizations, this is the first time either has won an International Emmy® for news. We take great pride in their achievements and congratulate them and the journalists behind these riveting reports.” said Bruce L. Paisner, President & CEO of The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. 

TV Globo’s Jornal Nacional: War on Drugs coverage of the four-day battle during which security forces took control of Complexo do Alemão- a major drug dealer’s stronghold in Rio where close to 400,000 people live, won the News category.

NHK’s Back from the Brink: Inside the Chilean Mine Disaster report on the Chilean mine disaster that trapped 33 miners 700 meters underground, in August 2010, won the Current Affairs category.

The International Emmys were presented to the winners by The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in New York City on September 26, 2011.

Nominees for ten other International Emmy Awards categories will be announced October 3rd at Mipcom in Cannes, France. Winners will receive their awards at the 39th International Emmy® Awards Gala, November 21, in New York City.
